Torigny Les Villes

Torigny-sur-Vire, called since 2016, Torigny Les Villes, is a charming town nestled in the heart of the Norman bocage, in the Saint-Lois country, in the Vire valley.

Cradle of the Monaco family

Former stronghold of the descendants of William the Conqueror, Torigny Les Villes has a past full of history with its 16th century castle, birthplace of the famous MATIGNON family.
In 1715, Jacques de Matignon, owner of the castle, married Louise de Grimaldi, only daughter of the Prince of Monaco.
Partially destroyed during the 1944 bombings, only the southern part of the castle remains today, entirely restored.
The Château des Matignon now houses the town hall. It contains many Aubusson tapestries, Norman furniture as well as the museum dedicated to Arthur Le Duc, local sculptor.
The Cour aux canons is a public garden with a view over the ponds, the playground and the old quarters of Torigny.

The ponds of Torigny

The ponds of Torigny Les Villes are the trace of ditches dug around the castle to make it almost impregnable by the possible enemies. Over time, these ponds have been integrated into the park of the castle.
The promenade under the lime trees is protected for nearly 300 meters by the immense 12-meter high wall that Jacques de Matignon had built to protect his wife Louise Grimaldi from the winter winds.
The ponds are classified as 2nd category for fishing, with a picnic area and games for children. Many departmental, regional and even national competitions are organized there. Daily or weekly maps are available at the Tourist Office.

The steps

Every Monday morning, on the Place du Château, a traditional market allows you to discover the products of the Norman soil and on the Place de l’Orangerie, a livestock market will delight by its atmosphere the young and the old.
